When I review a restaurant I take into consideration other factors besides the food. For example, if I had been reviewing this place solely on the fish tostada I had today....I would have to award a generous 1/2 star. Yes HALF a star. The delicate fish was breaded too heavily and then deep fried to a very hard crisp. My friend ordered a chile verde burrito and I was totally envious. I should have ordered that. A margarita might have helped the tostada taste better but that's just me. I really like the relaxed casual vibe of this place and I would totally come back here to hang out after work or at the end of a hot summer day to enjoy something to drink at the bar. I might even be willing to give the food another try. I'll give this place an additional 2 1/2 stars because I had good company during my meal. :)

Happy hour 2-6 M-Thurs. and Friday 2-5. $2 drafts. $1 tacos including their fish tacos, which are pretty bomb. Not the best I've had, but for $1, hell yeah! Chips and salsa being refilled asap, service is rockin', outdoor patio kicks ass on a sunny day.

Pretty standard food, good service, and great people watching. My friend and I walked in in the middle of the dinner rush, so we sat at the bartop. No big deal. We got a lot of foot traffic from the staff, which was great because they were all over refilling our chips n' salsa. We both had the 3 taco combo plates, mixing it up with chicken, carnitas, and carne asada. It came with beans and rice as usual. It was good, not great, but good. I should have went with the 2 taco combo though because the plate was huge. I'm not saying I had leftovers, just saying I should've cut it back a little. If you want to do some quality people watching, this is a great spot. You can sit right up to the sidewalk and see Belmont Shores' best and worst. It's great. However, watch out for some of the worst. For the most part, people are really friendly in these parts and the happy hour is pretty good.

My wife and I ate here the other night. The food was good and the prices were good. However, if you just drive 3 miles to Hawaiian Gardens, you Will find a variety of authentic Mexican restaurants with better food overall.

Best in class for absolutely hooked up Happy Hour delights. $1 - beers, tacos $3 - flan I found my spot! Finally. The fish tacos are awesome and worth it. Nothing like a cold relaxing beer to ease your rough day at the office. Be sure have your school ID handy.

I NEED to come back here and SOON. I have a craving for their yummy street tacos. And no I'm not pregnant, just might look like it. My first encounter with Taco Surf was at the Stroll & Savor during the Summer of 2000 something, I forgot. I cradled the tiny tacos (fish, chicken, beef) in my hand, and before I knew it, I had devoured them. Went back again to try their meals and I had the taco combo. Sooo good! I love their chips and salsa as well!! I will definitely be back here, and it must be soon!

Great Location! Great Food! Great price! Friendly People fish tacos! I recommend After a walk on 2nd street you can't go wrong.

Nothing unique about this place really... I like their Happy Hour offerings though. They've got $1 tacos, $2 fish/shrimp tacos for Happy Hour. I don't remember their drink specials, but I don't go here for drinks anyways. For entrees, you get a large portion than what one would expect. A burrito is about a foot long, and about 4 inches in diameter, for example. Other than that, the quality isn't as great as I would expect. Flavor in most of their entrees are lacking to the point where you need to overload whatever you're eating with salt/pepper, salsa, etc. Their fresh guacamole, as fresh as it is, did not have much taste to it at all. Food: Not that great overall Drinks: Don't remember them, but this isn't a place to come drink anyways Service: Better than other restaurants nearby Other: Happy Hour is a plus here. Can't beat $1 tacos You want to be able to come here with some friends for Happy Hour. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Mmm.. A girlfriend mentioned getting together to catch up here but it didn't work out so I went with someone else around 8pm. They have some great prices and the food is outstanding! I had fish tacos..the sauce is great. My friend had carne asada tacos which were tasty as well. As I recall they have their own hot sauce which was great and the salsa was outstanding. Coronas were pretty cheap and we sat at the bar so there was no wait. I can imagine this place probably gets pretty crowded after about 9pm or so though. **Oooohhh....the margaritas are WINE margaritas cuz hardly any places on 2nd have liquer licenses cuz of this whole area residents thing but ummm....not great.**

  • Shelley F.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon. We had great service, but the taco shells and chips were not fried properly. Having been to other Taco Surf locations, I knew this was abnormal, so we informed the waitress. She apologized and spoke with the chef. Would come back to this location, but Seal Beach is still my fave!

    (4)
  • Matt K.

This place is crowed and loud. The food is average, rice dry and the chips tasted stale. The major good point is that the price is pretty inexpensive. When we were there they ran out of flan. Better experience at Super Mex.

  • Kelsey L.

So I have been there twice now and I have to say, some of the best Mexican food I have ever had!! I am a Vegetarian, and their Veggi tacos are the bomb! Plus, we talked to one of the waiter's whom I also think is the owner or manager. I fell in love with their house salsa and he told me they make it fresh EVERY day! I told him I loved it and he have me two cups of it to take him and enjoy which was so kind! Everyone else there is friendly as well :) I just wish it was a little bigger in there, it's kind of cramped when waiting for a seat :)

    (5)
  • Katherine L.

Decent location and food. I'm used to El Farolito though, so can't really say their food was all that great. It was good enough to come back to though! But service wasn't all that great. And their margarita's are made with...white wine. Weird.

Best. Fish tacos. Ever. Get them Baja Style. OR: Ensenada-style shrimp burrito. That is all.

Great place! Small and cozy like most places in Belmont Shore. Fish tacos are amazing, and good 'ritas.. Go during Happy hour for a good deal. Wouldnt make it a special occasion place, but great for some drinks and tacos with a few buddies..

Why is it that when I'm walking on 2nd Street I always feel inadequate when I'm without a dog, a baby, or I'm not on a beach cruiser? Are you pondering what I'm pondering??? Any-hooo... Taco Surf is one of my favorite places to have happy hour on some random weekday when the weather's warm and I have 10 bucks in my pocket. From 2-7 they have $2.00 Tecate, and $1.00 tacos. I prefer their Fish Tacos which are grilled to perfection and served with a heapfull of onions and fresh cilantro. Plus their complementary chips are colorful and their salsa is thick and packed with flavor. I also heart their Gringo Hot Sauce too. This gringo gives this fine establishment 4 yelping stars!

    (4)
  • Yi Z.

The food was surprisingly...not bad. I know, I tend to judge a book by its cover. This "cover" was screaming bad, Americanized Mexican place for alcoholics like Cabo Cantina in West LA. But as it turns out, this place makes excellent quesadillas. Mom and I shared a Quesadilla El Pescador with fish and shrimp and my stepdad had a Quesadilla Grande with chicken. The chicken was shredded, not cubed so it was extra tender and tasty. I was quite impressed. We also got a pitcher of beer for $12 to share.

  • Liz A.

We had to wait at the bar for a table...waited 20 minutes until someone helped us but the entire time the people around us who just came in were helped. When we got seated outside a couple came and got sat down immediately, given chips and salsa and by the time their food came in....our waitress asked us what we wanted to eat...this whole process took 45 minutes and while I'm yelping we JUST got our beers and chips....customer service is absolutely terrible! The one in Huntington Beach is 10x better.

  • Dominik M.

We're regulars here. Always packed on the weekends. Great happy hours, good specials. Very fast friendly service. As previously said get an outdoor table, a pitcher of beer and either the Shrimp Tacos, Fish Tacos. Also has great chips and salsa.

    (4)
  • James Y.

They put something in the salsa that keeps me coming back. Tacos are good. Beer is beer. Margaritas suck because they don't have their liquor licence so they use wine instead. WTF? They're okay.

  • Donald G.

I don't think I realized this before as I would come here for drinks years ago, but this place is really more of a family option than I remembered it (kids were everywhere). We ordered the seafood fajita special and several drinks. I really think the kitchen must have ran out of seasoning this day because everything tasted like nothing. The fish, shrimp, onions, bell peppers, guacamole, and pico de gallo, all had little to no flavor. It really seemed like they didn't even try to make it a good dish. Maybe I also didn't realize that this place became health conscience and seasoning is an option that needs to be requested. It was like everything on our fajita plate was cooked by method of a boiling process before placed on our plate. But the best part was the beer and chips n' salsa. I wish we would have stopped at that. Just beer and chips n' salsa.

  • Carla Lee H.

I love Taco Surf!! Kids meals are not overpriced, food quality is the same every time, the service is usually great. If you go in on a weekday afternoon or a weeknight, you can find a lot of the college crowd (ie - mostly guys, mostly happy hour - lol). Saturday late afternoons are perfect for families - the wait isn't very long (or there is no wait), and it's mostly other families, so it works out good. I usually get the bean and cheese burrito (and add lettuce and pico inside) and I never get charged extra for that. They don't have A LOT of vegetarian options - I wish they would add more, but having said that, the food is still delicious and you should check it out if you haven't been there yet. This place is soooo good that when my MIL comes here from New York, it's one of the first places that she wants to eat at... (:

    (4)
  • Sherry S.

I'd give it a 1 star but the waitress was right on time and the cooks got the food out quick. They also were always by to fill up the chips and salsa and you did not have to ask. What was I thinking? I saw all the kids all over the place. That should tell you something.. basically kid food. But, we were starving and thought what could go wrong with beans and rice and some tacos.. and "surf" tacos mean like fish tacos which you cannot always get. We ordered the fish tacos and the chile rellano. Anyway, they use flour tortillas for the fish tacos. They put a ton of sour cream and quacamole and iceberg shredded lettuce and cheddar cheese and a little piece of fish that you could smell not so fresh. The rellano they just ruined. I guess they must make up their own recipes but I know that it cannot be some strange place in Mexico where they are from. It's definitely beyond Americanized.. And I could not even wash it down with a Margarita because they only serve beer and wine.

  • T C.

This was not our usual taco place on 2nd Street, but it will be. Excellent nachos, excellent service! We came here only because Taco Surf was doing a very generous fundraiser for Fremont Elementary School (giving back 20% of sales!), but now it is our new "go to" when we need good Mexican food in the 'Shore. The house made horchata is great!

  • Ray H.

So I eat here about once a week. I've try most everything on the menu and it's all very good. Love the happy hour and street tacos. Christine and Shawna are always happy and greet me when I walk in. My favorite place to have lunch any day of the week.

Tacos are tiny!! I rather go to hole mole for fish tacos. Happy hour price for beer is cool though.

So so so good. A must do is taco Tuesday. Or Baja fish taco everyday. Really can't go wrong here, it's pretty fantastic, and they just redid the front patio so it's much more open!

  • Claudine V.

Been here several times for HH, dinner and lunch. Like what other people have mentioned, nothing spectacular about this place. Just typical, average " American- Mexican" food. If you want the real MEXICAN food, go to West Covina, Downtown LA . I will give it a few stars for the nice crowd and fun decor!

    (3)
  • Vanessa L.

Worst taco tuesday. Tacos are skimpy. The soft tortilla wasn't cooked enough and the crispy one had been sitting for a while. The worst was the potato taco. Obviously frozen orieda chopped hashed brown...not mashed potatoes.. and the portions were horrible. Mostly lettuce. We got chips refilled but not our salsa? Will not be coming back

    (1)
  • Kata B.

Had a groupon and decided to check it out. We didn't have a reservation on a saturday night but it only took 10 min to be seated. We ordered fish tacos and chicken enchiladas which were both delicious. Definitely would recommend to anyone.

Yummy fish tacos!! Huge and messy, you need a fork! Small restaurant but gets busy! Come early for happy hour and patio seating!

I used to come to this place and get the best service and the best meals. It's changed allot and it's not for the better. I truly feel the cooks have gotten Lazy and half ass, and the managers don't staff enough Buss boys or any at all to help out the servers. I'm a salsa and chips kinda guy and I love a constant supply of the stuff. When I first started coming here years ago, the service was great and the salsa and chips were always kept full. I always get the veggie tacos and they always used to come super packed with ingredients making me feel like what I was getting a was a true deal. Now when I go in, mainly since the Westminster location opened up, my salsa goes empty almost the entire time because the server never checks and the buss boys wernt even told to show up for work that day, and the tacos they make for me are skimpy ass taco Tuesday style tacos with almost nothing in them. This has been really hard to handle since I really enjoyed this location, but not anymore. I simply go to the Westminster location and all is well and fine. All of the staff that used to be at this location are now over at the new one on Westminster blvd. chips and salsa flowing freely, and huge tacos that leave you satisfied. If I wanted itsy bitsy portions, I'd go into LA where everybody is on a portion size diet. I hope one day this place gets better. Love the location not the quality or service anymore. Try Westminster location for the right kinda service and quality that formerly made this location great.

  • Mike R.

Wow..... Taco Surf is now dead. I've been eating here since I was ten or eleven, I'm thirty now. The service now is hardly what I call efficient, it was bland just like the food. I always sit at the bar but it took a half hour to get my food after ordering, yet the people next to me that ordered after got theirs ten minutes before. The waitress came by and kept telling me it's on the way, I got my food and it was cold (luke warm). Don't go there anymore they have ruined a neighborhood establishment. It use to be soooooo much better.

    (2)
  • Chiara H.

First I have to say that the service is excellent and very friendly... And most of the food is really good (shrimp flautas = YUM), but some things were just "okay," like the tacos... And the name of the place is Taco Surf. Also, it's EXPENSIVE for what you get! One little taco is $3.95! Then add $3 for shrimp... And $3 each plate to add rice. Drink prices weren't bad, though, and the atmosphere is good and chill. But $50 for lunch for 2 people (drinks were one Coke and 2 beers) seems like a lot. Just one more thing, because I am picky about guacamole... Taco Surf's isn't very good at all. :(. Again, service was good.

    (3)
  • P G.

This is a small and cozy place with an outside patio if you want to watch people while you eat and drink. Their prices are low and they always seem to have some type of drink special. The chips and salsa are average and the food is good. This is a nice little place to stop by for a quick bite and drink.

  • Erica J.

We stopped here one afternoon after meandering downtown trying to find the skunk records that once existed in this area. What a great little gem! And not being from the area, little did we know it was a chain but all were different! I ordered the chicken taco salad and my husband got juevos rancheros. Born very good! You are given a lot of chips and salsa to start so try to hold back or you can't finish your meal. We both enjoyed our lunches and left quite full. The reason why I am not giving 5 stars is the waitress was a bit Inattentive and we were waiting some time for some club soda. We did both have stomach aches later but who's to say their food is to blame. All in all it was good food and worth trying this one! I enjoyed being outside on a nice day. I would go back! Just don't get their mimosas they are too sour!

Great food, great service loved the outdoor seating area too.

This is probably my favorite Mexican place on 2nd Street. You can tell a lot about a Mexican place by their rice and beans and this place has great rice and beans. I had the shrimp fajitas, which were delicious! Fresh chips and salsa and GREAT service. Definitely frequenting this joint!

    (4)
  • Kent M.

Ok, so this review is for the bar ONLY. My friend and I just sat at the bar for a couple drinks. And, it was a pretty good experience. Friendly staff, cheap drink prices and chips and salsa (nice touch!). I live close by so I can see myself going back for a quiet drink every now and again. And perhaps to sample the fare.

  • Tiffany C.

Met up a few friends I haven't seen in a while to catch up over some tacos and beer. Why did we pick this place in particular? Probably because it was taco tuesday, and everyone knows the craving for tacos reigns supreme on Tuesdays. It's a tiny place. But most places are on 2nd Street, so that doesn't really effect the rating this place is getting. The atmosphere is casual, and can get a little loud if there's enough people in the place. Many booths, as well as outside seating. The booths weren't too uncomfortable. Seats weren't squishy so you don't sink into the seat. The tacos were good. Definitely not your Taco Bell taco. I had the chicken taco, and it was a good blend of flavors. A definite plus for me was the fact that my friends and I had lost track of time, and had to urge to order another pitcher of beer at 10:30pm (they close at 10pm). Instead of telling us, "We're closed, sorry, no more beer!", they were actually going to get us another pitcher. Of course, once we realized it was well after closing, we had them nix the order, paid the bill, and went on our merry way.

I've been to 3 of the Taco Surf restaurants and this one is my favorite, mainly because of Jennifer the waitress. She's been there as long as we've been going there (about 11 years). Friendly service, great chips and salsa and you Cannot Go Wrong with the Baja Fish Tacos. Yum!!! The down side? It's really, really tiny so there can be quite a wait and it can be really loud.

  • Samantha H.

i love you taco surf, you have yet to let me down. Everything on the menu is great, but I usually stick with the burritos (specifically the baja fish burrito) or the tacos (carnitas or baja fish). I could easily drink a gallon of their salsa if given the opportunity. Delicious food, great happy hour (for both tacos & beer), and fun atmosphere. Need I say more?

    (5)
  • Tiffany O.

Good Mexican food for a good price. I've been here many times, so I've tried dishes from the burritos to the carne asada plates. They're never anything to write home about, but they are satisfying and flavorful. The service is up and down here, but for the most part, it's reasonable. The ambiance is a bit rowdy, so if you're looking for a nice place to peacefully eat you might want to skip out. Overall, if you're craving Mexican, I'd recommend it.

This place is not what it used to be!!! I think it is still okay, but I used to love this place. The service was good and attentive to our needs, the food was just a little disappointing. Maybe the kitchen was having an off day???? I will try it again.

Awesome service! Wasnt a fan of the El Pastor tacos, but Im way too picky. The fish tacos and the shrimp tacos are AMAZING! With the Happy Hour having $1 tacos and $2 beers, cant beat it! Great job guys!

Super affordable, tasty and my kids like it.....ALL 5 of them! Yes, I have a family of 5 and feeding all of them at a restaurant can be a challenge both financially and socially. This place fits the bill and we always leave nice and full!

The Belmont Shore location isn't the usual Taco Surf we go to but we were in the area the day before Thanksgiving and had a Groupon we bought awhile back. The service was good but the food was very disappointing. My sister and I had the tacos which did not taste good at all. We both commented on how cold the grilled fish was and I used extra salsa to try to improve the taste (didn't help). My husband could only eat a few bites of his burrito before he had enough as it was nasty, and he's not a picky eater either. The kids were okay with their meals. My sister and I ended up with food poisoning as we were sick that evening when we got home and all through the night. Our Thanksgiving was ruined as we had to cancel all plans for the day. I mustered enough energy to speak to the owner the day after Thanksgiving. She took the information and basically said thank you for calling, we'll review our kitchen procedures and check the equipment. I was a bit surprised by her reaction, as she was not very apologetic or concerned her customers had gotten very ill eating at her restaurant. She said she couldn't do anything for us as we used a Groupon for most of our meal. This is of course untrue, she just chooses not to do anything, which is the difference. During our conversation, I didn't even ask to be reimbursed for our meal. I was later advised to call Groupon to get a credit. The whole situation left a bad taste in my mouth, figuratively and literally.

You can never go wrong with Taco Surf, unless you stray away from what they're famous for... the most yummy and delicious fish tacos this side of the border! I never understand why people come here and order wet burritos, and such. I have before made this awful mistake and have been terribly disappointed. Aside from that, stick to the baja fish tacos (or tostada which is basically a big gigantic fish taco in a flour tortilla shell) or the shrimp tacos ensenada style, and you will not be disappointed! Love, love, love me some Taco Surf!

Happy hour is amazing. Can't go wrong with $1 tacos! I had like 20. Haaa not really, but I really wanted to, they were great! $2 drafts so I had a few beers which I can't complain about either. Can't wait to come back here! So yummy :)

Portions are huge here and everything comes out super fast. Our server Pepe was very attentive and always checked up on us to make sure we were doing ok. Great service. I ordered a combo with: Baja fish taco Chile relleno Carne asada enchilada Side of guacamole Refried beans and rice Everything tasted pretty good and I was stuffed!! Couldn't even finish my platter. The prices here are very reasonable. Will be visiting the Westminster location soon.

awesome happy hour, great service and the fish tacos are good! I love their habanero sauce that you could put on the tacos it gives them a real kick! They have outdoor seating and when you walk in they always ask you if you want outside seating if its available. I came here with my girlfriend and after a bunch of beers and tacos, it was only 26 bucks!

When I first moved to Belmont Shore in '96 I was eating here once a month and, I never had bad meal. Also, I never did HH since I don't drink well liquor or domestic beers-ISHKA! One of my favorites was spending time with a friend and getting the bucket of mini Coronas on a Sunday afternoon and ordering up the Super Nacho Plate. So, as I was in one of my feelings of betrayal & suffering moods I decided Taco Surf would ease the pain-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWyPDPH7YwY&feature=related Well, it's been over 5 years since I have eaten here and, I'm glad things haven't changed. Ordered the Pork Flautas and added rice and beans for $1.90. Flour tortillas stuffed with Carnitas, quickly deep fried and sprinkled with Cheddar cheese. Sour Cream, Guacamole on top of fresh green Butter Lettuce (not that shredded Iceberg crap). Fluffy Spanish Rice and smooth as silk Re-Fried Beans. Absolutely scandalous!-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci7xgL6dIl8&playnext_from=TL&videos=FX3UBgGzw6c Service was great and I never ran out of chips or water. Oh, BTW, those colored chips are quite iconic and with out being to TMI their departure is quite the plethora of color. Vilma Diaz "La Diva de La Cumbia"

If you're looking for quick service, without a lot of frills, Taco Surf is absolutely adequate. The shredded beef tacos were really good, but the cheese enchilada lacked in flavor. Overall the food isn't terrific, but we sat down at 3:50, and were outta there by 4:20, so it was a quick, sufficient meal. Service was fast and friendly, the food's just not that great.

I've heard pretty good things about this place from several Long Beach natives, so I decided to check it out. The interior of this place is pretty awesome. It's very beachy and reminiscent of Rubio's or Wahoo's, but a little bit more upscale. We got seated on the patio, which was enclosed and heated, as well as decorated with some lights! I liked the casual, but cozy atmosphere. The fiesta fries are pretty freaking amazing...just imagine a generous portion of fries, loaded with lots of cheese, sour cream, jalapenos, and salsa! Mmm, can you possibly go wrong with that?! Unfortunately, I really regretted my dinner order. I got the fish burrito, which sounded pretty good, but it ended up having way too many black beans for my taste! They didn't add much else to the burrito, other than some pieces of fish and a bit of light salsa, so unfortunately there were no other ingredients to redeem the black bean overload. I highly recommend avoiding this dish at all costs, unless you like beans! If I ever come back here, I'll probably just eat chips and salsa, plus the fiesta fries. That's right - I'm a carb lover and I would be fully content with the above for dinner :)

Overall, I had a great time here. We went for dinner and the atmosphere was fun and energetic. We were surprised at how busy it got. The food was pretty good, on par. I thought the tamales were ok, but still good. Their Margaritas were delicious and super cheap! That was my favorite part. Our waitress was really nice, but there were some mistakes. My boyfriend ordered corn tortillas and she gave him flour. It also takes awhile to flag down someone to help you. But I'd come here again!

Just... Yes. Yes yes yes. My friend brought me here for Taco Tuesday, and the Baja Fish taco was probably the best taco I've ever had. The service was prompt, the decor is awesome, and the prices are better! Check this place out.

Great place to sit outside on their patio area to people watch. HUGE burritos for the price, esp. in the Long Beach 2nd street area Decent salsa. OK Shrimp taco. Unfortunately, the Baja fish burrito, the ground beef taco, and the steak taco were all very mediocre and boring. I would have given 2 stars only, but we had pretty good service and my friends LOVED their food, so I decided to be nice and bump it up an extra one star.

This is a friendly place (the waitresses were cool and on their game) but unfortunately, the grilled fish tacos I had were pretty bad. They were cold and the fish didn't seem very good. (I had some mild stomach issues later in the night). It could have been just bad luck on my part, but I think you can probably do better elsewhere in the neighborhood.

Quick service with a friendly smile. Love going for happy hour and Taco Tuesday. What I do suggest is that they offer a super spicy salsa for those who LOVE spicy salsa.

Took the family here on Valentine's Day & knowing it would be crowded, prepped ourselves for not-so-great service. The staff were great. .. attentive & kept our chips & salsa supply full. The salsa is outstanding. I ordered the grilled fish tacos. These are literally whole filets of fish grilled & put onto tortillas, not chopped like other places. Topped with enough guacamole, pico de gallo & lettuce to make a small side salad. This is my second time here & for a place that's sandwiched between two other establishments, the food, prices & service are great. Family of 5 for $35. 5 stars for this hole-in-the-wall.

Craving crunchy tacos and hubby decided to take me down to 2nd St for a lunch date. Taco Surf seemed to be exactly what I was looking for...until I took a bit of the crunchy ground beef taco...bland meat. I tried spicing it up with some of their habanero sauce that's on the tables, but all it turned into was spicy bland meat. Now the Brandi Salad was delish! The chicken was cooked and seasoned almost mouth-wateringly (can I use that as my adjective??). The lettuce tasted fresh and the avocado was nice and ripe. Not to mention that is is HUGE! I should have forgotten about the taco and spent my belly space on the salad, but I kept hoping the more of the taco I ate the better it would get...nope. Hubby had the Tres Tacos but hard shells and ordered Carne Asada (dry, dry), Ground Beef (bland) and Carnitas (dry, dry). He said the rice was decent. All in all, this is not the place to come to satisfy a craving for a crunchy taco, but seems to be the place to come for bottomless chips and yummy fresh tasting salsa and an ice cold beer with some friends. I hear the baja fish tacos are pretty good, so maybe the next time I crave those, I'll check them out again.

We came here for my friend's birthday. I ordered the taco trio with the carne asada, fish taco, and shrimp taco. The best was the shrimp taco. It was stuffed with shrimp. The shrimp was just bursting with flavor. The baja fish taco and the carne asada was a bit of a disappointment, since I have tasted much better for much cheaper. I come from El Monte after all. The fish was almost unnoticeable and the carne asada wasn't too flavorful. Service was excellent. Note: You get a free churro for birthdays. Yay for free stuff!

Craving fish tacos so why not taco surf? I gotta say very disappointing! Where's the fish? It was over cooked and dry, how do you dry out deep fried fish? They use more of a breading than batter which is thick and not typical for fish tacos. Also had a crane taco, the meat was flavored ok but again overall no wow factor. So while I was really hungry and totally excited for good amerimex food, they really let me down. Service was good, vibe is right they just need to step up the food quality. Riley's fish tacos are far superior.

4 stars if during happy hour (possibly 5 if you are also in the mood for a Dos Equis amber; 3 otherwise. Would recommend the fish ($1 version) tacos during the happy hour. (2-6 m-th, 2-5 f).

Been living in Long Beach for about 2 months now and finally found a decent Mexican joint in Taco Surf. The happy hour is killer, pints of Dos XX for $2.00!? Tacos for $1.00?! Sign me up! Super fast service, the chips and salsa are refilled without asking, the place isn't taking itself too seriously, its just a great spot!

Not good! Baja salad tasted like frozen fish sticks on a bed of canned black beans. Fish plate with mango salsa had absolutely NO flavor. An my sons steak tacos were awful the steak was dry and tasted like it was reheated from a few days ago. Skip this place if you want good food and your hungry. Decent place to have a beer and salsa, but nothing else.

Absolutely amazing! This is my first review about a business and I must say, Taco Surf is worthy. I ordered "#1 Armando's Chicken Bowl". A bowl of rice, pinto beans, and grilled chicken with a side of pico and lettuce. The chicken was seasoned to perfection and the service was great. Will definitely be back :)

We thought it was happy hour, as the outside sign was misleading, stating it was HH from 2-6 PM. After we are seated, we discover HH ends an hour earlier on Friday and isn't consistent with the rest of the week. It's Friday after 5PM, we stay anyway. What made me happy about Taco Surf: *Complimentary bottomless basket of freshly fried tortilla chips and great salsa *Dos Equis amber on draft Reasons why the rest of the food experience was mediocre: *My friend orders the grilled fish tacos, and she says "I keep eating waiting for the flavor to kick in" as she pours on the hot sauce (and she doesn't even like hot sauce). *My combo plate was missing some key ingredients. -The spanish rice was sparse and dry -The cheese enchilada could of used some cheese inside. Honestly there was more cheese on top of the enchilada than in it. I've eaten here a few times in the past, but have definitely had more memorable meals. It is probably best to spend your dollars here during happy hour.

Went here during happy hour and although the food was tasty, the beer was cold, and the service was great, I was a little disappointed with the serving size. Like I said it was happy hour and the tacos were $1.50 a piece which seemed like a great deal, especially because I think tacos are regularly $3, but those things were so small! Definitely the same size or smaller than the palm of my hand! I hope it was just cause of happy hour because if I paid $3 for that tiny taco I'd be really upset! The chips and salsa did seem never ending though, which was a good thing cause I was still a little hungry! The salsa tasted just like my grandma's salsa, it was great!

Ordered delivery through grubhub. Would give 0 stars if I could. Never delivered my entrees, and the dessert and enchilada that did make it to me 40 minutes late was ice cold and soggy, completely inedible. I will never be their customer ever again.

The food was average. Not authentic Mexican food. The service was average as well. We sat on the patio which was nice. It was raining that day and stayed warm under the heaters while enjoying the rain and the beautiful rainbow outside. My husband go the Carne asada burrito wet and did not like the sauce. I got the potato taco meal. It was good but only came with one taco, beans and rice. I liked it but wish it could have came with 2-3 tacos.

Pretty good, Taco Surf, pretty good. You're that combination of cheap, kitschy, and gigantic that I look for in a hooker. I mean, restaurant. I mean, hooker, too, but that's neither here nor there. Unless you also offer hookers. Now, I can't really gauge the authenticity of this place based on my limited experience with real Mexican food, but I guess I don't really have to for this review. This place is good. They have tasty things, and you should just go with it. Also, a kickass happy hour with hella cheap beers and dollar tacos. Like, every day. Check it out for a quick meal and crazy crap all over the walls.

I prefer to give this place a 3.5, almost 4. But they don't have that option! The scorpion soup was delicious. The baja fish taco also delicious. And they have great customer service and a large heaping of guac. Also, ONE DOLLAR FOR A TACO. I SHALL BE BACK FOR HAPPY HOURRRR. ____________________________________________________________________ I came back for happy hour. Sadly, It has diminished to a 3. The mini 1 dollar tacos were really....tasteless. I'd prefer to spend the $3 just because it tastes better. Where was the baja sauce? I couldn't even taste the fish, just a lot of cabbage..and more cabbage. The guac was pretty delicious, but honestly..4.95? Deeeeemmmm that's like almost 5 McChickens. Nope.

We stumbled on to this place and were very happy with the food and service. Even though our food took a long time the staff was very good at keeping us full with chips and salsa until our food came. Again we were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. I would recomend this place if your in the area.

Love the wet bean and cheese burrito. Used to get pick up from them at least 1 time a week. Only 2 stars because a waitress added her own tip on one of my pick ups. I am a good tipper but when it is pick up, I don't see the need to do so all the time. I was comped a meal but only after some begrudging comments from Taco Surf.

I was there last night with family and got sick from their food. Two out of the three of us there barely slept because we were so sick. Never in my life had I had food poisoning (I currently still can't eat anything without getting nauseous). Additionally, I had never had an issue with their food before so it's disappointing that I will never come again to the establishment that once had my favorite shrimp tacos. Spent $40 plus tip and felt the sickest I had in my life. Never again

Downhill and FAST . . . WOW! I can't believe it! Todays visit has me eating two chicken tacos with rice and beans. I didn't specify shredded or chunk. I like both. Well, the chunks are very hard and dry. Very large. To large for a Taco in my opinion. The "new" corporate taco shells are a definite deal killer. What is up taco surf, WHAT IS UP??? Flavorless refried beans and very VERY DRY rice! I like that the server picks up my FULL PLATE while I'm sitting in front of it Without even asking if there was a problem. It's unfortunate that most people will stiff the server for the kitchens oversights however, since she failed to see if there was a problem, in my opinion, it's a stiff day. . . Back to Super Mex. No bueno taco surf!

Eh....what can I say, it's not the greatest Mexican food place but it did the job. The place was pretty dead on a Monday night but that's understandable. I should've seen the warning signs when there was only one group inside of elderly white people. We decided to go in anyways. The waitress was very friendly and provided free chips and salsa to start. Salsa was a bit runny. I decided to go with the fish burrito. It was not that good. The pieces of fish were cut thin and was not plentiful. The batter that it was deep fried in took away from the taste of the fish. It became really dry. The beans on the side were OK and made up for the dry fish. The beer prices were reasonable so next time maybe I'll just stick with beer for food.

I WANTED to like it, but the service was slow, and the food was just okay. I ordered wrong - that was my fault, I ordered fish tacos that were fried, and that was yuck. I like my fish healthy! For 3:30 in an afternoon - it was just too long to wait for service to be happy. On the bright side - I love the location and the decor is super fun.

On a really nice Sunday morning I decided to check out taco surf for breakfast. Their breakfast menu consisted of about ten items. I decided on the breakfast quesadilla. The server might have been a manager or owner he was really friendly and made us feel welcome. My friend and I lended up ordering micheladas. The micheladas were great! And the quesadilla was good. Really enjoyed the big pieces of turkey bacon in them. Ill probably go again to try their regular menu.

Warning: Proportions are huge!! Which is great but quality is not that great. Service was good. Tortilla soup is wonderful and very filling. Never had such chunky tortilla soup though. I had to shred chicken. Chicken tacos were a little dry. Shrimp burrito was good, just nothing special but good enough to satisfy hunger. Overall just a ok place.

Slightly below average Mexcan food. I had the three taco dish. The grilled fish taco was actually very tasty while the carne asada and chicken tacos were inedible. However, I have to admit the salsa was good but the guacamole was crap. Service was good as well and our server was attentive. The place itself is on the divey side. The kind of joint that you go to for happy hour or to watch a game but don't really care about the food.

Perfect for a slow afternoon of cheap fish tacos and beer while you people-watch. Bring your dog - as long as they're tied outside of the patio fence, they're allowed.

Review from a mexican food hater-- Yep- I don't like mexican food. Tacos, burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas-- que ASCO! So when I told my boyfriend "Let's have mexican food for dinner," his head spun like the exorcist and looked at me like I had the plague. "Mexican?!?! Are you sure??" I don't even know why I wanted mexican food for dinner. Me: "Yes." Let's go to Super Mex." Boyfriend: "Eh. Let's try something new. I've walked by Taco Surf and it's always crowded. It's gotta be good." And oh man, was he right!! It was DELICIOUS! I NEVER eat salsa with chips. But the salsa was soo good-- spicy and a nice consistency-- not too watery, not too thick. The vegetarian enchilada was tasty, but I really liked my boyfriend's pork burrito. That thing must have weighed in at 3+ pounds. Not only was it stuffed with pork, but they put pork on top of the burrito. The meat was moist, tender, and flavorful. We also ordered the famous fish taco, and it was yummy! The fish was flaky, even after it had been fried. The prices were low enough that when the bill came, we both laughed at how inexpensive it was. This whole experience converted me into a mexican food lover!

WORST TACOS EVER!!! My boyfriend and I went here recently during happy hour and got their $1 street tacos. I had carne asada and my boyfriend tried carnitas, steak and their special baja fish tacos. Everything was totally favorless. The tacos come with onions & cilantro and green sauce. I took a piece of carne asada and dipped it in the green sauce (trying to savor any flavor possible) but alas i could have been eating tortilla and it wouldn't have tasted much different. My boyfriend was also seriously disappointed with his food. Even the service was bad. It took 5 minutes for me to get a little side of cheese. Ridiculous!!!

this place hits the spot everytime I'm in Long Beach.. Always there with work but we never skip Taco Surf :) The tacos are a diff style. They use corn tortillas & keep them soft.. not really my thing. I don't like corn tortillas at all really. But everything else is so amazing that I don't even care what it's wrapped in.. hahaha.. The steak & chicken is so flavorful & not dry at all. Rice is nice & moist & beans have flavor.. not just lard flavor..lol. Their salsa is amazing.. just enough spice :) I've only experienced their food through carryout & I've only tried what I've listed.. can't wait to go on my own time with my husband & try new items on the menu!!

This Taco Surf location is kind of hidden next to George's Greek Cafe, so you kinda have to look for it since George's is so big and has a giant ass sign. When you find Taco Surf you will not be disappointed. Went on a recently rainy Sunday and there were only two other folks there at 6:30 because of the rain. Fine by me! We sat inside in a booth, which gave me a chance to check out the decor, as I am usually out on the patio. Strangely enough, the decor reminds me more of Hawaii than Mexico. They definitely need to work on that. The kitchen brings you fresh chips and salsa, which are pretty standard. The food is a little different from your traditional Mexican restaurant, as it includes Surf and Turf with Mexican food. As a result, they make a killer baja fish tostada! It comes in a giant tortilla shell loaded with lettuce, onions, breaded fish, signature baja sauce, beans, sour cream and guacamole. It is to die for but it is also very filling! The burritos also look amazing and huge but I have never tried one, as there are too many good thugs on the menu! My advice: get anything with baja fish (tostada, burrito, or tacos) and you will not be disappointed! Prices are on par with other Mexican restaurants. The two of us ate and had one drink each for $25. -1 Star for the kitchen bringing out multiple refills of chips and salsa to their friends at the other table, but not to us!

You can't beat Taco Surf. Good mexican food, great atmosphere whether you wanna watch the game or people watch. The service is always great. Go there enough and the servers will even get to know your name and order if you're consistant like me. Great tacos, great burritos and my favorite chips and salsa anywhere. They are good for groups. My friends and I even had dinner before prom here back in the day. The atmosphere is definitely what keeps you coming back. Fun, laid back and good food.

Well i just came here for a quick beer before work and to watch the beginning of the USA vs. Mexico soccer game. It was like 4pm so it was happy hour and i got my $2 budlight and had some chips and salsa. The salsa was pretty good, a mild taste, i prefer a kick in my salsa. The service was good. The server was really nice and i enjoyed being there. Next time i'll have to go for a meal and a beer because i enjoy eating the food. Then my review will continue...

Taco Surf is one of our favorite joints for Happy Hour. Cheap brew and tacos, and really good chips and salsa. I like: Carnitas burritos Chicken enchiladas Pitchers of Dos Equis Tortilla soup Carne asada tacos Don't go here for real authentic mexican good. Go for a tasty burrito and beer. I ordered a 6 ft burrito for my birthday party. It was more popular than I was that night. Damn burrito stole my thunder.

It's simple, when I think Fish Taco I think of two things. Taco Surf is the second thing I think of. They have THE best baja fish tacos in Long Beach. I've been to a few different locations but I really like the second street location. The atmosphere is chill and service is good. The chips are colorful and the salsa is pretty tasty. I would prefer to eat here over Super Mex down the street any day. I really like going here for happy hour and sitting out on the patio and people watch with a Tecate in one hand and a fish taco in the other.

I actually like Taco Beach better than Taco Surf. I think it's because of the atmosphere, food, and drinks. Nothing special happened here. Just came to fill our bellies, and was not completely satisfied. Hmmm... I wish I could like this place.

I give this place 3 1/2 stars. It's not bad but definitely not the first place (or 2nd and 3rd place) I'd think of when I'm craving Mexican food. I've gotten the Killers Alamo burrito and asada tacos. I didn't really like the burrito, it just tasted too bland but the tacos were pretty good. The location is prime (right in Belmont Shore) and the set up is pretty nice but overall, its just average for me.

This place is okay. Not good but okay. Anyways, if you really want authentic Mexican food then head down to Santa Ana or better yet, Mexico. However, this place comes close to the real thing without the drug cartels or criminal elements found in Mexico. On to the food. I ordered a pollo de taco with refried beans on the side. I also ordered the nachos with cheese. The tacos were okay, through a bit too salty for me. The nachos were okay, but again too salty. However, there's happy hour for beer, so Dos Quis is cheap.

Consistently good Mexican food. I've been coming to Taco Surf for many years and it's always the same. I have never had a bad experience. There are several locations around the beach community. If you want Mexican food I recommend going there!

We frequent this joint on Saturdays for lunch...service is always good...fish tacos are pretty darn good for the price! I order the famous Baja fish taco, hold the cabbage and guacamole ( allergic to avacados), and add black beans and cheese. One of these does it for me! If not that Baja fish taco, it's the Original Ensenada Shrimp Tacos (hold the guac).....pretty tasty!

No visit to Long Beach is complete without a trip to Taco Surf. To be sure, this isn't authentic Mexican food - rather a Californian take on it. Admittedly, I haven't ordered anything except for tacos and beer but that's why I like it. It's pretty simple, laid back, and cheap. The food is good enough to keep me coming back too. I recently tried the carne asado, which was pretty damn tasty. But, I prefer the crunch of the baja fish taco, served with cabbage and a tasty sauce. I also really enjoy the shrimp taco topped with guacamole, peppers and onions.

As others have stated, this isn't really Mexican. It's like...California Happy Hour Beach Mexican. I'm the whitest white girl ever, but I like it. I like the hanging out on 2nd St having some chips n salsa vibe of it. The tortilla soup is my favorite tortilla soup and the baja fish tacos are yummy too. The salsa is pretty mild, but I like the extra cilantro flavor of it. They have a really good happy hour $1 taco menu and I think the beers are probably on sale too, but I don't drink beer so I don't pay attention. This place isn't a destination for me, though. It's a place that i would eat if I happened to find myself on 2nd St hungry.

Dude, this is the white man's messican food and no, I don't mean Taco Bell. i LOVE Taco Surf. Especially Taco Surf's happy hour. Two dollar drafts/imported Mexican beer and dollar tacos!!! The tacos are excellent -- carne asada, grilled / baja style fish tacos and the Ensenada grilled shrimp tacos are exceptional. The one thing I wasn't too jazzed about was the mango salsa...tasted like canned mango and a little too sweet for a salsa. I had a few beers and a few tacos and I am one happy Mexican jumping bean!

Expect to wait to be seated here. They have great service b/c they are trying to get people in and out which I don't mind. Great food, good service and chips and salsa are always a must!

Good cheap Mexican food in Belmont Shore. I'll admit i usually pop in for the $1 taco "happy hour" in the afternoons... they are the smaller tacos, but for the price you can really try a large variety... i love the fish tacos - they're Baja Style... Mmmm The rest of the menu is also good, big burritos, and the price is great! They dont have a full bar though, so be warned!

The bf and I stopped by this place on a Tuesday afternoon, round 2:30pm. The place was pretty packed for an afternoon lunch. We had to wait 15-20 mins for a table. When we got our seated, .. the waitress was attentive and always coming back to take our order and checking up on us 2 times after that. Then she disappeared!!! wtf?! She was still around the restaurant, tending to other patrons, but guess was too busy for us. She totally forgot about us. Anyways, onto the food. We ordered their super nacho, their fajita combo, and their tacos. Since their happy hours on Monday - Thursday are in the afternoon, they have half off beer specials as well as $1 taco deals ( their tacos are like street tacos ). Their nachos is pretty yummy. You get a huge plate of nachos dressed up with cheese, beans, choice of meat, jalapeno, guacamole, salsa and sour cream (we skipped on the sour cream) on top. It's pretty big, probably enough for 3 people. When our fajitas came, it only came with 3 pieces of tortilla (you can choose which type of shell you want from flower to corn). Why do places only give you 3 pieces when the plate can use 4-5 tortillas? ugh, frustrating. The fajita came with choice of meat, guacamole, rice, refried beans, salsa and shredded lettuce. The tacos. They were a little disappointing. They had a choice of meat; chicken, carnitas, asada, fish, shrimp. The meat on these tacos aren't as tastey as the ones you find on the streets. Their best tacos were the chicken and the carnitas. After our meal. We waited, waited ... waited, and waited some more for our waitress to come give us the bill. She walked around the outside patio tending to other patrons, bringing them food and water. Yet she never bothered to turn her pretty head towards us. wtf?!! We must have waited 30 mins - 45 mins for her to come give us the bill. Finally we just stopped the busser/hostess guy that seated us to bring us the bill cause we were ready. Then we just walked up to the cashier, which she was also doing, and handed her the money. She then almost shortchanged me. errr?? Overall, I think she forgot to charge us for something cause total, our food came out to $23 bucks and it should've been more .. but I'm not complaining that =) Pretty good place for cheap happy hour stuff. Just not the greatest. And the service... well thats in a whole another ball park.

I love Taco Surf because their chips are awesome and you know what you're gonna get. I'm a fan of the Alamo burrito because it's big like my stomach. Top it off with a Corona and you're in for a good meal. You might have to wait occasionally, but it's all good. Great place to have a fun dinner with friends. I wouldn't say this was a date place.

we dine here when we just want no frills fish tacos! inexpensive, sit down, mexi restaurant, have only ordered fish tacos here, have not had the chance to try anything else....i am ez to plz they serve complimentary chips and salsa, i like their tri-colored tortilla chips...salsa is not bad either.

Wet alamo killers burrito was massive. Added extra sour cream and guacamole. Was still tasteless. Belmont sure could sure use a Baja Fresh. Have never had such terrible Mexican food until I moved to Belmont Shore. If you like flavor, try somewhere else. Rubios down the street is ten times better.

When on a motorcycle ride, we always look for a good Mexican "hole in the wall" to stop at and have lunch. This place at first glance was busy (good sign) and had a nice little outdoor patio. We were seated immediately and our drink order was taken right away. Good chips and salsa and tacos were tasty. Will come back again.

This place has an amazing happy hour. I am definitely a taco girl so $1cheap yummy tacos. They give you unlimited chips and salsa definitely a plus is my book. I love the patio seating on nice sunny days. One of my fav places to reminisce on my college years

Been there to many times to ever say its not a 5. Nachos are awesome, and you can always share them. Bean burrito is ridiculasly good as well as the soft tacos. Go when you can.

Great location, delicious food, and good service! Can't beat $1 tacos and bottomless chips and salsa. Wish they were a bit more pet friendly, but it's kind of hard to find a place that allows great dane puppies the size of dinosaurs!

I keep making the mistake of going here. It's just bad enough that I don't enjoy myself but not quite bad enough that I remember to not come back. The food actually isn't that bad but try and remember not to order the fish. They need to do something about the fish. The service is pleasant and despite always seeming relatively full you'll be seated quickly. I've been here and remembered not to order the fish and I'm pretty sure it was pretty good. Nice place to sit down and order a pitcher with a few friends. Don't avoid Taco Surf just avoid their fish.

Why the heck are there wood chips on the floor here? I see no construction, so I can only assume the chips are for a situation of 'just in case somebody's sick all over the place'. The boy was in the mood for Mexican, so we headed in here after noticing the happy crowd on the outside patio. We were quickly seated and brought some tasty chips and salsa. Not too spicy, coulda been chunkier. The service was hella fast, but the food itself... not so great. The guacamole had more tomatoes and onions than actual avocado, and the boy's gimongoid burrito was found lacking. He may have eaten the whole thing, but he admitted it was because he wanted to prove something, as opposed to actually enjoying it. I DO appreciate the fast service, though. I just wish they were bringing something to look forward to.

So average. Kind of a divey place to grab a couple beers and some tacos. Chips & salsa are fine, but the food is forgettable. No need to come here twice.

  • Erin N.

i love tacos-- so its not easy to just win me over like that when we are talking about mexican food. however, one bite of their shrimp taco and i was sold. i saw a sign for happy hour in which the prices were even better, like a buck a taco! this is definitely my kind of place :] move over chronic tacos-- its taco surf FTW! :]

    (5)
  • Steph P.

This place has fun decorations and is great for young college students. The food is nothing special and the chips and salsa could be better. Not worth the prices. Not worth trying; i like panama joes a bit better which is down the street.

Nice little taco bar. Food is good. If you get water, you and your date can eat well for under $20. Place is Americanized, but still good. Salsa is amazing! Get some to go!!

Had some of the fish tacos here and I was glad I took the recommendation. Even eating the left over cold fish tacos they still tasted great. Went during the week and they got the food out pretty quick. Next time I'm back in town I'll be stopping by for some of their tasty tacos.

    (4)
  • Joanna S.

I don't think their food is particularly mindblowing but it's a fun place to eat at with a group of people. I would only recommend Taco Surf for happy hour, which has great prices. It's cheap, tasty, and gets crowded enough to escape dismal while giving you enough elbow room to manhandle those tacos.

I have been coming here for a long long time and it is just one of those places that i really love. The staff is so nice and friendly . . . I usually go here on an afternoon off with a girlfriend. We sit out on the patio and chat and people watch and share a bucket of beers. What I order - the Brandy Salad with chicken and a side of baja sauce. Definitely big enough for 2 girls to split. Love their dollar tacos and love their taquitos. Great place to spend the afternoon!

  • Joey C.

I always liked Taco Surf but there's a big reason why I like this place and I am giving it 4 stars. Though the place seems a little small; for some reason all Taco Surfs seem a little small. They have drink specials and happy hour specials as well. But the only reason I go into Taco Surf. is for the Flautas. These flautas come with shredded pork or beef. The flautas are just taquitos made with flour tortillas instead of corn. Much better, if you ask me. Every plate and combination here are under $10. They also serve a great breakfast here too. Just order the Huevos Rancheros. You'll like em. There's a kids' menu as well. Taco Surf is on the east end of the Belmont Shore strip. It's within walking distance of all the other restaurants and dive bars in the area, also it's near many banks as well.

i have been going to taco surf for many years....haven't been in a while but i go through my fazes. GREAT happy hour....you can def get a good buzz going and fill your tummy for under $10 a person, and the 2nd st. location is perfect for enjoying a sunny day with some cold beer and a little bit of people watching. also, they have great choices for vegetarians*...their veggie taco by itself can be a meal.....filled w/ rice, beans, all sorts of grilled veggies topped off with guac. make sure you get a side of baja sauce! that, a beer, and chips and salsa can be very satisfying. the mango salsa is amazing on just about everything. oh...and for the other veg heads out there, a little tip for a great salad: the brandy's salad w/ black beans instead of chicken, mix in a little ranch and tapatio and crunch some tortilla chips over the top. mm mm good *if your a veggie you might want to skip getting anything w/ refried beans, last i checked they contain lard, but black beans are always available.

Love this place. Great food, great atmosphere, service is good. All around a great place to get Mexican food. They're margaritas are good too. They're wine based so no tequila, but still very good. Only thing is that they only have beer and wine as far as alcohol goes.

  • Lisa P.

I used to eat here fairly often but then just fell out of the habit. Recently rediscovered and it's about the only Mexican food restaurant i like. I don't really like Super Mex... all i have to do is think about Super Mex and i can taste it. yuck. (although i do really like the chips there.) The shrimp taco's are terrific... the special we had tonight was great (breaded shrimp enchilada) and the albondigas soup was really good. The service (Ramon) was unimpeachable. The beer is nice and cold. The chips ar fresh, and not greasy. The salsa is perfect... not too juicy and just enough heat. They must have heard about the quacamole because now it's just right. Draws a mostly college age crowd but there are also some of us ma's and pa's as well. But it's young and inexpensive and yes, you can truly "come as you are." For $15 two people can get a lot to eat... for that price, wood chips on the floor are about right.

  • Darlene A.

This is another of our favorite taco spots. The salsa is great and they are very easy going when I ask about how the food is prepared and the ingredients. (I'm a vegetarian and I don't eat dairy, so I ask a lot of questions.) I usually get a bean burrito or the juevos rancheros (yes, I eat eggs). I love both of them. The service is great and the food is always served hot. We love the location, it's close to home so we can walk.

I seriously love this place, my husband and I eat here whenever we get a chance. Belmont Shore/Long Beach is like a second home to me. The servers are great and atmosphere is fun. The fish taco are honestly the best anywhere and great with a Pacifico beer ;).

  • Bryan M.

It's Mexican food. You can hardly screw that up. Not a very complex food. Beans rice meat and cheese. Good atmospher. Don't let the Foodies that gave it low ratings fool you. They can't tell the differnce from one Mexican place to another. Just like to act like they have some refined palat. You rate Mexican places on 3 things. Service, ambiance and whether or not you got food poisening. This place is great in all 3. No food poisoning.

Good enough to come back, liked the relaxed atmosphere. The crowd appeared mixed, a balance of local, frequent out-of-towners, and tourists. Grab a seat in the patio and watch people strolling up and down 2nd street, not as oc as laguna beach, perhaps a good thing. Wine margaritas, i prefer the tequilas. Sawdusts speckled the floor. we had four soft tacos a la carte. Touted as the best in town, surely there must be better ones in town. I thought the redsnappers were good, the carne asada were a little dry but still tasty and chips and salsas were average. Service was prompt and straight forward, perhaps lacking a little personality. The bill was nice, on the inexpensive side. Overall a cool joint, if not a 5 stars on taste ; ) Peace... **Disclaimer: this review is subjective as all my reviews will be. Your experiences may vary based upon your preferences and time of visits ; ) No I'm not an attorney, but I know a few.

This addendum is for the loacation on Westminster next to the 405 freeway. If you sit in the bar-you don't get served unless you get the bartenders attention. The bartender (she) was busy watching the oscars instead of serving? WOW-I don't think I have ever had such bad service. Oh well-our food order was wrong and the baja fish tacos were----awful. Couldn't even taste the fish? Yucky. I promise to tell everyone what great service ya'll have-NOT.

This was one of my favorite hang out spots in Long Beach. I love their happy hour...$1 coronita beers and $1 tacos. Does it get any better than this? When I don't order their happy hour stuff, I love their salad. I know, you're thinking, "salad? that's it?" but it's HUGE. and delish. This place is totally socal.

    (5)
  • Paul L.

I was debating whether or not this place should receiver 3 or 4 stars. The service wasn't all there, but the flautas and tacos along with the price during happy hour was really good. The food won me over this time. The place can really fill me up without having to spend much, and I keep munching on those tortilla chips they give with their salsa. Though there's a few places to eat around there, I'm not disappointed about going here.

I am a Mexican food fan, YEAH! I remember going to Taco Surf in Seal Beach when I lived there oh so many years ago. I remember I liked it, didn't love it. But a few months ago we walked down to 2nd Street and decided to give this place a shot. AND I decided I loved this place and for one reason only, their chili relleno. I ordered it Ala cart as I wasn't in the mood for a huge meal. What I didn't realize is that this puppy was a meal in itself. It nearly took up the whole plate. From bite one, I'm in love. Although the cheese filling is cheddar and I tend to like a mix of cheddar and jack or just jack cheese, I have to say, I'm in love. Did I tell you I am in love? Yes, I'm in love with a chili relleno. And this love only cost $3.25. Hell, you can't even get a decent fast food meal for that price! And don't forget the chips and salsa- free! And I have to say their salsa is pretty damn good. So if you are on a budget and want to fall in love like I did for the low, low price of $3.25- Taco Surf is my recommendation.

    (4)
  • Lane K.

This place isn't gourmet food. It isn't isn't authentic Mexican. It's white people beachy cheap Mexican food. You get a lot for what you pay for but it's not the best. The service at this particular location isn't the best. The one in Seal Beach has much better servers. They get one star for the price, one star for the massive amounts of chips and salsa they'll keep giving you, one star for the good Happy Hour deals.

After searching down 2nd with my girlfriend for a place to grab some cold beers and a view, we stopped at Taco Surf. The wait was about 30 minutes at 2 PM on a Saturday but I think it was in part because it was such a nice day outside and everyone wanted to enjoy the outdoor seating. Anyway, we sat t the bar and ordered a beer. The bartender was nice and, before we knew it, were were called to our seats outside. Chips and salsa came right away and they both got my approval. I like spicy salsa and this kind, although spicy, was not intolerable to those that aren't so much of a fan of the heat. I know this because my gf also approved and she's kind of wimp when it comes to that. Anyway, my chicken enchilada and taco were both really great and I had enough left over to take home with me. My friend got a chile relleno and beef taco. I tried her chile relleno and it was just right. They make them fresh and, if you've ever had one that was not, you know how much that can make a difference in the taste. In addition to the great food, the prices were pretty decent too. I've heard they have a pretty good happy hour so I can't wait to go back to enjoy that.

This place is one of my "heavy rotation" restaurants in Belmont Shore. BJ's is another one and so was Legends (hey, what happened to Legends, are they going to ever re-open?). Anyway, back to Taco Surf. I always get the 3 taco special, one fish (baja style), one chicken, and one ground beef, a side of guac and a pitcher of Dos XX and I can be very happy! Others that go with me get the huge burritos and explore the menu. I try so hard to not always get the same thing, it's hard! I love them tacos! Great happy hour, sit outside if you can, watch the people stroll and enjoy! Belmont Shore at it's best!

Fish tacos are the best I've had, amazing! Both the grilled an fried fish. However, if someone knows a better place, please let me know. Service is okay, a little slow at times, especially when they are busy.

  • MARK P.

I like the salads, and the salsa. But to me the test of any Mexican restaurant is the enchilada, and Taco Surf fails here on so many levels that I can't even begin to list them. (Honesty Alert: my friends all think this place is Absolutely Grade-A-Number-One-Terrific and insist on going at least once a month! But I've noticed that nobody EVER orders an enchilada! Hmmm!)

  • matthew w.

Have you ever been to one of those places that all the food tastes the same because it's all cooked in the same lard? Well if you haven't, why don't you make a stop into Taco Surf. Typical Mexican beer selection. The price for a pitcher of Dos XX isn't half bad and believe it or not, the chicken wings are awesome. Hmm maybe it's because I've drank a whole pitcher of Dos XX that makes the wings good. Never the less they are good. Why do I keep going back, I ask myself. Then I realize there is no other place with crappy tacos for a dollar and crappy beer for 2 dollars. Ah the joys of Taco Surf.

    (3)
  • Kim N.

I'd say 3.5 stars for this very chill Mexican joint. Get a table outside when it's nice and people watch while you're consuming some fish tacos or carnitas. It's cheap, solid, food that draws a good sized crowd.

  • June S.

I've never had bad service here, but I've never had AMAZING service either. Everything about this place is mediocre. The food is mediocre, the service, the seating, the interior design...just everything. I'm not a huge fan of eating my burrito with a fork and knife either, so that doesn't help. I have to give them props for the free chips and salsa though. Too bad I get full by the time I finish them. I like their options for vegetarians and the fact that their selections are pretty simple, but like most taco restaurants they serve huge entree dishes that aren't too impressive. This place is great for anyone who feels like eating Mexican at a sit down restaurant when they're on 2nd street (it beats Super Mex by the punch) but if you've got a car then turns around and go to a taco joint.

One of the better Mexican and Fish taco destinations in the South Bay. This place is actually in the Belmont Shore area just East of Long Beach. They offer beer and excellent tacos. You just cant go wrong with that. Like the reviewer before me stated, just sit back and enjoy a bucket of coronas and tacos.

Crappy Service, from a Crappy Server!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we first sat down and had to ask our waitress 3 times for chips and salsa, finally got it from another server. She brought us half full drinks, and it took for ever for her to come back and take our order. you would have thought she went to the coke factory to refill our drinks as long as it took. I asked for a side of sour cream and it came when I was done eating. My GF's rice was hard, crunchy, and cold!!! the beans were cold too. when we told the waitress, all she said was " oh I will let them know ". not even a sorry for the shitty food!!! oh yeah, there were also a bunch of NOISY birds living in their patio, they could have cared less. this place ruined our date, our Sunday afternoon, and our trip to belmont shores!!!! BEWARE, IF you get stuck with the hefty looking European sounding waitress...... YOU MIGHT AS WELL LEAVE AND GO TO TACO BELL!!!!!

Love it! Cheap Mexican food. Don't think of it as Mexican food when you go though...it's more like a white persons interpretation of Mexican food. It is really casual and did I mention cheap!

LOVE this place. The shrimp tacos are out of this world. Excellent veggie meal options, as well. I could eat here every day.

First let me explain. 4 stars to me doesn't mean "OMG! This place was amazing!" It means "this place does a good job of doing what they intend to do". That being, a small eatery on trendy 2nd street. First Impression: Why are there woodchips on the floor? Interesting..i thought this was a mexican place, not a weird steakhouse. Experience: We sat on the patio. Got chips and salsa quickly. They were yummy. Not amazing, not bad, just average. Ordered: We got Tacquitos and the Chicken Enchilada plate. The Food came relatively fast. I was like "huh, we just ordered!" So that was really cool. I think we were in and out of there in less than 30 minutes. So if you're on a crunch to grab some lunch, this could be a good choice. The food was good. I enjoyed it. I like mexican food and probably eat at mexican restaurants once a week or so, and this place was pretty much on par with the average place. Like I said earlier, it wasn't "OMG! This is Amazing!" It was average and good. The service was good and friendly and that means a lot to me because I hate bad service. Final Word: If i'm in long beach again and I'm craving mexican food, I'll probably go back. You should too

Great happy hour, quick bite! Fantastic tacos and salsa! Other food like taco salad not as impressive, but great tacos are all one needs -- oh and a pitcher of beer with friends!

Fast service for mediocre food. I sat down here and was served almost immediately, with quick delivery of the 2 taco's I ordered. I started to pick one up though, and it broke almost immediately: everything passed as edible, but I generally was not impressed. The atmosphere was dirty, and the view wasn't all that impressive: nothing to see man! I would recommend stopping here for happy hour - there's cheap buckets of Corona I've hear - and to chow down on some chips.

Happy Hour! BAJA FISH TACOS AND A BUCKET OF CORONAS! MMMMMMMMMMMM. Sit on the patio and people watch. Super casual, you can wear sweats, flip-flops and a beanie. YAY!

The food is sh*t. Absolute worst ever and I eat all over No and So California for mexican, including all the taco trucks around Central and West LA. Always packed and I always scratch my head. Really the worst mexican food ever. The rice is a joke.

  • Dave C.

We're regulars here. Always packed on the weekends. Great happy hours, good specials. Very fast friendly service. Good selection of beers. As previously said get an outdoor table, a pitcher of beer and either the Shrimp Tacos, or the Beef Flautas. Also has great chips and salsa.

  • Ben B.

Taco Surf is no different from any of a dozen taco stands in LB. The service is prompt and friendly. The food was so-so, nothing to get excited about. The beer selection is typical (Corona, Pacifico, Tecate). I was disappointed to find out that happy hour ended at 6pm, that seems a bit early. I can't say that Taco Surf isn't a good resturant. It is what it is. If you don't expect much, you should enjoy yourself or at least be content. The only warning I would give about this place would be the high density of bro's and brodettes. How many Avenged Sevenfold t-shirts can you fit into a resturant? Go to Taco Surf and find out for yourself!

We showed up about 2:30pm for a late lunch and the place was busy. Nice, casual beach atmosphere. After a 15 minute wait, we were seated. The waitress couldn't name the four beers they had on tap. Another waitress filled her in. We both ordered the special of the day, the yellowtail fish taco, baja style. Chips and salsa showed up on the table. The salsa was very watery, a few flecks of cilantro floating in it and not much flavor at all, absolutely no heat in that salsa! The tacos arrived and looked good. One bite and it was obvious that the yellowtail was old, as it tasted very fishy. So that's why it was the special that day.

I have been here once. I was open to eating anything good. I haven't been that excited about my options in Long Beach, but this place always seems to have customers. Unfortunately I asked the server what there best item is--she said the "fish burrito." The food microwaved. My plate was crazy hot and the burrito was clearly not delicious...the beer was cold. The chips and salsa were served but could not save the meal...they usually provide a tasty side note to most of my Mexican restaurant experiences.

  • Manny C.

One of the best happy hours in Long Beach. You can enjoy a nice day with a bucket of coronitas and tacos. The service is excellent as well.

    (4)
  • Peter M.

I was pleased with my $1 fish tacos, all fresh ingredients and light and delicious. Beers were cheap too. Our group got a big table by the window to the street, but had to wait a while... small place with only 2 bigger tables, and not much bar area to wait in, so best to go in a smaller group, and during happy hour to get the taco and beer specials.

I think that Monica was right on the mark. You have to try the menu, but once you find something you like, stay with it. I like hitting up Taco Surf after work, most notably during happy hour. It depends on what you get, but the vibe is good. Personally, I like the carne asada, and the happy hour tacos. Chase down some fish tacos with Dos XX and just relax on the patio. Stay thirsty my friends!

Some of the best mexican food I have eaten. I brought relatives from Connecticut, Kansas and Florida to Taco Surf and they just loved it. Great Chips and Salsa and great atmosphere. A MUST on 2nd Street.

  • Tina M.

Not sure what all the rave is about. I always go to Baha fish tacos but wanted to try Taco Surf today. I ordered two fish tacos and they were over cooked and had too much breading. I spoke to the waitress and she offered to give two free tacos my next visit. Even so, my lunch was ruined! The chips and salsa was good though...

    (2)
  • NickandSummer T.

I had an issue with a server. After, I hastily wrote a review of the issue and she personally apologized and offered to buy me lunch the next time I come in to visit. To me it takes a humble and honest person to own up to their mistakes. Thank you for apologizing. The way you handled this situation speaks volumes of yours and Taco Surfs professionalism. I look forward to my next visit!! On another note, we need to not be so hasty to write a review every time we are offended. Everyone is human and we all make mistakes. I am sorry for being so quick to judge. We need to speak words of life.

First, let me admit I love hole-in-the-wall places. This place is a LB 2nd street hole-in-the-wall. It reminds me of my poor ($$) college days, which is why I come back. If you're into bland Americanize Mexican food you hit the spot. Almost everything I tired was that description. Just really not that tasty of full of flavor. The service is great when sitting at the bar. FAST!! But I wouldn't shout out and stand up for this place. I would though probably still come for the happy hour, grab a glass of cheap Mexican beer, and a couple of their $1.50 tacos even if the taste is bland.....why not.....

    (3)
  • Dee P.

Went for a quick drink and the bartender/waitress was very nice. Sat right in front of the kitchen which was behind the bar and saw delicious plates coming out. If I hadn't eaten before I would've ordered something. Maybe next time.. thanks for the beers!

We've been going to Taco Surf for years. The food has always been good. I've never had a bad meal here. I especially love their shrimp quesadilla and fish tacos. The huge downfall of this place is the lack of tequila. How can you have a Mexican restaurant without tequila? You can't get a proper margarita here. As a native Texan, that is just tragic to me. Speaking of being Texan, last night we discovered queso dip on their menu. I was beyond excited and ordered it right away. Good queso is hard to come by in these parts, so when I see it on a menu, it's notable. Unfortunately, this was not real queso dip. This was the equivalent of nacho cheese at a Dodger game. So disappointing. Taco Surf, how can you call this queso? For shame! And serve it in a real restaurant? Do yourself a favor and look up the Homesick Texan's chile con queso recipe. Start there and then make it your own. Then you can call it queso. Make real queso and real tequila margaritas and I'll bump it up to 5 stars. ;)

Low key on a Taco Tuesday, but it left much to be desired for tacos. The chips are warm and the salsa is good. The beer is cheap but quality. The tacos...not a fulfilling experience. I'd rather go to Rubio's for Taco Tuesday, they have delicious fish tacos for $1.50 down the street. SOOOOO good. The shells on these tacos were super hard, hurt my mouth. I don't want to get accosted by my taco just because its cheaper on a Tuesday. This was a bad call. Seems like its good for groups, but I'm not returning for Taco Tuesday again, at least for now.

  • Vincent C.

Service was good. They give you free chips and salsa! Too bad the salsa tastes like Pace mixed with a "fresh" store bought salsa. Enchilada and tamale was mediocre. I could have made a better meal than this and I have no idea how to make a single Mexican dish. The beans and red sauce tasted as if they came from a can. Cheese in the enchilada was barely melted and food was warm but could definitely be hotter. If you want good Mexican food, go somewhere else. My wife's meal, the seafood bowl, was much better than mine. It was a small portion, but was a complex meal making it filling. It had a decent piece of an unknown fish in it and several grilled shrimp. I wish I got her meal because we would have given the place 3 stars.

Solid three and a half stars. Not really true Mexican food but legit. Checkin coupon though is from 2014. Need to update.

Let me start off by saying go down the street and spend your money. This place is apparently doing so well they are able to turn down business. I found the place on yelp and was in the area looking for delivery, so I called to place my order. The gentlemen on the receiving end of my call said they do not take orders over the phone... Hmmm... His next sentence was go to the website and place your order WE ARE TOO BUSY RIGHT NOW!! With service like that I kindly said thank you and made it a point to walk over to super mex down the road. Sorry Taco Surf, maybe you should shed some light on your employees about first impressions..

  • Nick J.

Mediocre at best I missed happy hour by 20 min (happy hour 3-6pm) And I'm very sour that we were subjected to paying full price ($4) per taco The value per item was just not worth the money I was highly disappointed in their Baja fish and al pastor tacos Both lacked the gusto that I would expect from a $4 taco Flavorless, overpriced, not much else to say 2 stars awarded for good service

    (2)
  • Ann B.

Great food and service! But you have to realize its on second street. That means tough finding parking and busy with crowds of people. Still one of my favorite places to eat on a Sunday afternoon.

    (5)
  • Abby H.

Taco Surf always brings an enjoyable classic Mexican meal at a fantastic price. They're open from lunch to late night and are also family friendly. I have never had a poor meal there and have eaten there since I was two. Definitely a great place to get drinks or eat a nice meal!

    (5)
  • James B.

Well let me preface this by saying I've never had Mexican food I didn't like. So perhaps am not the best to comment on the quality of it lol. I know I love this location. Never too crowded. 100 yards from the beach or so. Which is also never too crowded. Service is fast and you get pretty good portions for a descent price. How can you complain about eating enchiladas by the sea whilst holding a Tecate :-)

    (4)
  • chris w.

It takes skill to be this bad when their Los Alamitos location is so good. Honestly the Carne Asada has no flavor, there was no spice in the sauce. The "Spanish rice" was just white rice cooked in chicken broth. The cheese in the cheese enchilada was cold and hard when it came out. We had a living social deal and I can see why they needed to have it for this location, it's the only way they would get any business.

    (1)
  • Jason F.

Eh with so many other options in the area for food it's defiantly skippable. Food is subpar but the happy hour drink specials seem pretty good. Drink for happy hour and go someplace else to eat.

    (2)
  • Jasmine C.

Good customer service, good vibe and location, and good prices. Don't come here expecting authentic street tacos. Tacos are more Americanized and bland in taste but still good for a Taco Tuesday on 2nd.

  • Kat M.

Great service!! Great authentic taste of Mexican food. Have to try the fried pork! Super cute ambiance as well. Very California, very laid back. #likeit

Try the ensenada shrimp, pastor or baja fish tacos, pipeline burrito (ask for half red sauce half green sauce..so good!) or the fajitas! I eat here all the time so I switch it up. Other favorites: super nachos, chicken tacos 'Ensenada style' , chicken wrap, Ensenada shrimp burrito, seafood bowl, Taco salad.

  • Tyler W.

I come in for happy hour once a month or so, food is good for the price. drinks are well priced as well. But unlike most everywhere else on 2nd St they are NOT DOG FRIENDLY. Mine was laying UNDER my chair quietly, someone told me to it was a not allowed as if I had made a comment about her mother. I'm going to assume it is because of the health inspector since they have new NO ANIMALS posted all over the place and I remember eating on the patio more than once while other people had their perros. Long story short, I won't return here anytime soon.

do not get the fish tacos, they are nasty. good happy hour for drinks. the free chips and salsa is good

Two words: TACO TUESDAY! It is a great place for some tacos and beer with some friends. The food is OK, but if you go make sure to get the tostada because it is by far the best thing on the menu in my opinion. So not necessarily fine dining but a fun place to go with friends.

I wanted to not give this review any stars but our server was pretty nice so this star is for him I was visiting from out of town and came here with my sister and her family. My sister and I both had the grilled fish taco. We've had it before from another location and it's always been good. This time we both noticed the fish was stone cold. Not the temperature you'd expect for 'grilled' fish. We didn't think too much of it and ate most of our meal. Later that night, we both were violently ill. It was awful. Everyone else was fine with what they had eaten so we knew it had to be the fish tacos. This ruined our Thanksgiving plans for the next day. We had registered for a run but we were unable to go. We were pretty much out of commission all of the next day and even the day after we were still not 100%. It took a while to recover. My sister spoke to the owner. While they were 'sorry', they did not really offer to make it up to us other than to try to refund our groupon. Thank God we didn't pay full price! So be very careful if you dine here and I'd stay away from the fish for sure.

Food is just as good as the other places but the drinks are all beer and wine with a "wine based" Margarita. So I'll be sticking to my fav spot in Surfside.

  • Douglas C.

Taco Surf is a cool looking place and was full of people. We walked in a sat at the counter. We ordered a plate of fish tacos and a chili relleno plate. The chili rellenos were topped with stewed tomatoes and stuffed with cheddar cheese. What kind of Micky Mouse concoction is that? The fish taco were prepared with fish, cheddar cheese, lettuce, green onions, sour cream, guacamole, and tomato salsa. It's as if they had absolutely no idea how to make a fish taco, so they just put everything on it in hopes the right ingredients had made it in. The result was not a fish taco, but a kind of wired salad on a tortilla. It's a nice spot to sit and have a beer but the food is.... well, It's a fugazi - forget about it.

  • Jeff W.

Mediocracy at best. This place is kinda cute, very casual, and had an outdoor patio. But the food is very marginal and average. Look, if you just really have to have Mexican food then ok, but hey if you have any kind of an authentic pallet then you will be dissapointed. Food is Luke warm and average.

  • Debby L.

I've been to 2nd street many a time but have stuck to my known Creperie or Open Sesame. We were looking for something cheap and fun for happy hour today and decided on Taco Surf. I really like at atmosphere of this place. It was fun and laid back and we had ongoing chips and salsa that were quite addicting. The happy hour Dos Equis were 2 bucks and the tacos were 99 cents. The tacos are small, but that's how I like em. It was the perfect happy hour snack to sit and chill with friends. I was a little peeved that there was no ceviche, but the food that I got made me happy, so I wasn't THAT peeved.

    (4)
  • Edgar R.

Happy hour Fish tacos RULE! 1 buck, you can't beat that. The Baja Style tacos and the shrimp tacos are BOMB! Good beer selection, $3 on tap-not bad. Other menu items are cool, like the potato tacos or the enchiladas. Colorful tortilla chips and salsa. Great service, sports on tv most of the time, great location. COOL t-shirts= DEA-Drink Every Afternoon. LOL

  • Joyce F.

luckily for my family we were able to get a table for 8 without a wait. everyone liked what they ordered and the price was reasonable. the chips and salsa were delish and i was almost full of them by the time my dinner came. will be back.

Happy hour tacos $1! The pescado dinner is also delicious with the mango salsa! This restaurant has great food but it can get crowded.

Nothing special. Your typical and average "mexican" food. I hope people from out of town don't eat here, or similar spots, and think THIS is Mexican food.

  • Phoenix A.

I came here with a friend from the east coast who hadn't live out here in about 5 years. And all he could say was, "this place aint no Coco Renos". Then I said to myself, "Self, this aint no Brite Spot neither". I had finally come to the realization that the food here sucks. I had always enjoyed going to the Taco Surfs in Seal and Sunset. For years, I was just in denial about this one. No matter how nice everyone is, I just can never finish my food because it doesn't taste good enough to. I don't know if it's the lack of freshness or the greasiness or what, but I have officially chosen to end my relationship with this one. Thanks for I don't know what.

    (2)
  • Brendon D.

Don't order the tacos at a taco joint, you say? You heard right, people. Many folks down in the LBC love Taco Surf. Sometimes they even rave about it. I can't figure out why. I've been a few times and still can't see the "greatness" of the place. Though the atmosphere is fun and lively, the food seems like Sysco product: flavorless and taken out of a package. I have to agree with Gwen P.: The only manage to stay open due to their location. Don't half step. Sit out on the front patio and at least get a tan.

    (2)
  • Daniel K.

So came here for taco tuesday during their happy hour. I mean, $1 tacos?!?! How can you beat that? Alas, the tacos were nothing really special. I guess you get what you pay for. Had the baja fish, chicken, pork, and beef. I would say my favorite had to be the baja fish. Service was great though, which I'm bumping them up to 3 stars for. Food is definitely 2 star quality for me. Overall, I doubt I'll be intentionally making my way over here for tacos, especially not outside of happy hour.

  • Sylvia G.

Went here for Cinco de Mayo with a friend and def wasn't blown away. I had the fish tacos (since I read on yelp that it's supposedly their best thing) and it was alright. I had a baja fish taco and it just had one awkwardly shaped fried fish in the taco. The flavor wasn't bad but it wasn't anything I'd really go back for. We also got and shared their fiesta fries with carne asada which was huge and pretty good. The price was definitely good and there was a decent amount of seating - an outdoor area, booths, and bar. The servers were extremely prompt and friendly even though the place was full. I thought it kind of sucked that they didn't keep happy hour for Cinco de Mayo! Most places were having specials/happy hour for the holiday and Taco Surf totally got rid of it for the holiday. :(

All I can say is, Friday's seafood chowder! It's like crack, you know you shouldn't but you do anyways and you want more as soon as you finish a bowl.

Food was ok but the service was horrible. Our party of 8 showed the 10% off electronic yelp coupon and all they took off was $1.10 from our $130 bill. The waitress said the coupon was just for the person who showed it. We all had our phones available to show the electronic coupon but never got the chance. Even the manager didn't care, saying "the coupon says..." In this day and age when everyone has smartphones I amazed that nothing was said to us before thy ran the credit card. Ok food. Slow service, and rude management. Not going back

Taco Surf is a great place to go with a group of friends. They offer $1 tacos (mini tacos) during Happy Hour. Their fish tacos Baja style are my fave! I usually order the number 3 (2 tacos with rice and beans), but can only eat one of the tacos since they are so big. Their bottomless chips and salsa are yummy as well. The staff is always super friendly, attentive and never rude. This is one of my fave spots in LB. I only gave them 4 stars because I'm not a fan of their corn tortillas because they seem somewhat stale at times. Other than that, this place is legit! Love.

my wife and i have been going here for years now. service is always great! we have been to all of the other taco surfs and this one is by far the best in service and location.

Proof that Angelinos have no clue what real food is. I lived near this place for years and it is simply dumfounding that people think it is good. Most of the ingredients are straight out of a can. The salsa is terrible. The chips are those low-grade food colored style that aren't fit for a dog to eat. About the only thing with flavor is the pork chile verde. Overall, it's terrible. You know why people like it? 1. Location and atmosphere 2. Low prices 3. Big portions I guess that says a lot about southern California. Location is everything and if people can afford it and think they are having fun, then quality is totally irrelevant. And by the way, yes, the back of the restaurant constantly smells like five drunk guys urinated all over the wall. It has smelled that way for years. Astonishing that only a few other yelpers commented on this.

Taco Tuesdays $3 beers and $2.25 tacos AND Tapatio sauce! Lots of bright lights, chubby waitresses AND outdoor seating. Sometimes you'll find a crazy Russian Ukrainian eating tacos in the corner under the cowboy shadow photo.

  • Glen N.

Killer happy hour w/ cheap tacos. Filling burritos, great chips and salsa. Old-school lollipops on you way out. Unlike the other Taco Surfs (Sunset, Los Al, Westminster, Seal Beach), this one has a patio, overlooking the busy 2nd street sidewalk, so eat there or the bar. The booths are hard and wooden. It's like Amistad.

    (5)
  • Rick S.

The service was excellent. I've also been to the Seal Beach location too. I'd recommend The Scorpion Chowder Soup, 12oz. The Mexican cuisine is average, but the portions of the burrito are HUGE, so that's where you can put your feed bag on and get filled up. They do give complimentary tortilla chips and salsa, in a world where their peers may charge, it's refreshing to experience gratis table snacks. It's a great location on the main strip along Long Beach's busy 2nd Street. Parking can be easy if you're willing to walk a little, even FREE parking (no meters) in the adjacent residential neighborhood side streets too. 2nd Street is a nice place to stroll and shop too.

I was not a huge fan of this place. We happened to stop in on a taco Thursday (i like that it is not just Tuesday). The place was crowded so I thought it would be a good choice. The service wasn't great. It took forever to get the basics (water, utensils, napkins, and chips). The food was also over priced. Thank goodness there were deals on the tacos or else I don't think we would have eaten here. I got the flautas appetizer which tasted great. My boyfriend got some crispy tacos and felt like he made a big mistake. They were so greasy. He didn't finish them and felt sick later. I think there are better places nearby for mexican.

I was craving chicken soup... ordered a bowl and asked for cilantro/onions to put on top.. um you have to charge me for something that should ALREADY be included. Whatever.. sure. One slice of avo... truly a let down... The soup was bland.. almost tasted like it came from a can. I also order a single carne asada taco at the advise of my server... she said their fish tacos were really "fishy" - so you're telling me they are old.. yuck.. again so underwhelmed. The meat had too much fat on it.. had to spit my bits out without anyone seeing me do that and then hide it under the chips I didn't eat.. My beer was cold.. the pico was OK.. the salsa verde.. meh.. with my check in I got a discount... thank goodness... won't be returning ever however... maybe just for a beer that is on special.

  • Chris G.

Not bad, but not great. We had a group of 15 eat here over the holidays, and I get the feeling that this location is not really geared for groups. The service was s-l-o-w. BUT, I can see where this would be a good spot for groups of 4 or less people. The food was all OK - again, not bad, but not great. This spot has a cool surf vibe, televisions, and cold beer. I'll be back, but not expecting anything out of the ordinary.

Great happy hour M-T 2-6pm Fri 2-5!!!! $1.50 mini tacos $& $2.50 draft beers! Endless chips & salsa! Outdoor seating is great for people watching! The servers are very nice & quick. Great spot for kids too!

  • Esther K.

Thanks for charging us $0.50 for extra cabbage Shawna! As inattentive as she was, she definitely didn't forget to add that. Even my VERY mellow husband, who doesn't let anything bother him, said to her "you forgot to charge us for the extra salsa we got". Actually, that was worth the $0.50. I like Taco Surf because their seafood/fish bowl is light and tasty but I've never been charged for the extra cabbage I always ask for. I guess I'll stick to going to the one in Sunset.

I have a hard time giving this place a star. It was awful my order was messed up 3x on the third the food was tasteless and cold but I ate it anyway cause I was hungry. No apologies, no offer to make things right from a snarky server. We will not come back (all six of us). Hate to do this but I'm really tired of bad food and service being the norm. I would rather eat at home do dishes and know its done right not half assed.. I worked too many years as a server making sure people were happy and went out of my way for everyone what happened to that attitude??? sigh I guess it doesn't exist.

..... it was bad.... I mean really bad..and I've never wrote a review but tonight I feel compelled to warn anyone thinking about grabbing a burrito from this place to move on. I got the California burrito for my wife and I and I thought it was especially odd that it was 11.75 for the Cali burrito when every other burrito was 8 or 9 dollars, I figured it must be popular and good! I saw there was no meat in the burrito..wait no meat in the california burrito? so what kind of burrito is it because it's not a cali burrito without meat. I see there was an option to add meat for an extra 1.00 so I scrolled down to click on carnitas, the meat that should have been included in the burrito initially, to find that there was no option for carnitas....shredded beef was the closest thing to beef so I clicked on that and checked out for two burritos at 13.00 bucks each, 5.00 shipping and 4.00 tip. 35.00...yes 35 dollars for two burritos, let's just say I was very hungry and was really craving a california burrito. When I received the burritos I noticed the presentation looked great and the burrito was big which is always a plus. As I got half way through the burrito I realized I must have received the wrong burrito, I put down the burrito and called them to tell them they gave me the wrong burrito as this burrito had no meat no sour cream and no fries, it was just all beans and pico. Which by the way when did cali burritos have beans? He told me that we did in fact have the cali burrito and he was sorry we didn't like it....well thanks. It was an absolutely a terrible burrito, and normally I don't care honestly, why would I? It's just a burrito, but the only reason I am writing this review is because it cost me 35.00 dollars total for two bean burritos and I am kinda unhappy..can you tell?

No frills Tex-Mex in Belmont Shore. I was not blown away or anything but I would return. If nothing else the place doesn't seem to ever be overly crowded, and it's usually easy to get a table. The food is tasty for the most part and the portions are substantial. The prices are also quite reasonable. I was pretty impressed with my carnitas plate and struggled to finish everything. The house made salsa is also delicious. I found myself smothering everything in it! My wife ordered the fish tacos but was mistakenly served chicken tacos instead. The server corrected the mistake immediately and the fish tacos arrived quickly. They were alright, but I thought the breading took away from the fish flavor. They let us take the chicken tacos to-go but we ended up giving them to a homeless dude on our walk home, so I'm not sure how those taste. This place is totally average but you could do worse. The servers all had good attitudes and energy. She was honestly mortified when my wife pointed out the chicken tacos. I think she ran back to the kitchen and made the fish tacos herself! I would like to come back and try the happy hour specials!

Service was fine.. Wasn't happy at all with my order though. I ordered a Baja fish burrito. The fish was burned. it was very thinly sliced fish and a thick layer of breading. The white rice was undercooked, not very pleasant to chew... And the black beans were extremely dry. I probably should of mentioned something to waiter but I took one bite and lost my appetite. My boyfriend was done eating by the time a waiter came back around anyway. There goes $10..

My dining mate asked for extra sour cream for his dish, after the dish was delivered. The restaurant charged $1 for the sour cream. My dining mate asked that the charge be removed, since the waitress didn't tell him there would be a surcharge for the condiment. The manager came out and basically told us that we should have read the back of the menu which says additions like sour cream are extra; she also told us that things cost money, and all restaurants charge for sour cream. I understood her point, but we asked for the sour cream well into the meal when we didn't have the menu any longer. And though many restaurants do charge extra for things like sour cream, usually the waitress lets you know. I'm eating at Taco Surf because I can't afford to go to a better restaurant, so these things matter! Eventually the manager took the $1 off the check, but only after negotiations more tense than the Iran nuclear program talks. This kind of ruined the night for me, but I am not going to be unfair and say the food was bad. The new al pastor tacos were great, and the carnitas platter was good with the green salsa (it's a little too dry without it). The chips, salsa, and guac were good, too. It is nice to sit on the patio in the late afternoon and people watch. I will definitely be back but, having been duly chided by the manager, will not ask for additional condiments unless I'm ready to pay up.

There's a bunch of different taco places up and down 2nd street in LB, but I liked this place a lot! Good Horchata, awesome fish tacos! The restaurant seating area inside is a little dark for my liking, but there's cute outdoor seating too if you want to eat on a sunny day out. My only thing against this place is that they serve Pepsi instead of Coke.

SURFin the TACO wave! I LOVE this place and I love the area! Yesterday was an AWESOME day to go to TACO SURF for lunch! The plan...to take a long lunch and eat tacos! I wanted to go here because besides the food being GOOD I had a Groupon that I wanted to use so I would not be scrambling at the last FRICKIN minute like I usually do trying to use it! GREAT IDEA! I took a friend that also love to eat and we chill-ax at one of the outside tables because they all were open! SHOCKING really! A BEAUTIFUL day in a dog town and NO one was sitting out on the patio with their furry friend! We had prime seating so we picked one right up against the railing near the sidewalk so we could people watch and eat at the same time! It is so fun to people watch. The things folks think to buy and then dress in to come out the house! Really! Did you not bother to look in a mirror before you bought that zig-a-boo outfit? And you want me to compliment that clown outfit get up? You can't be serious! LOL We gave our server our drink orders just as the chips and salsa were being placed on our table and then commenced to ignoring each other on a mission to find an apartment in Madrid for my mates vacay next summer! NICE! Can I go too! We checkout out pictures while munching on chips and salsa and chatting about what to do and see there and where the apartment needed to be located! Why stay in a hotel when you can live like a local for a week or two! I LOVE it and it's the ONLY way I travel! Just as we were finishing that topic up our food arrived all nice and HOT! You know how I love HOT food that comes to the table HOT! SCORE! I ordered 3 tacos...one chicken, one asada, and one fish! They were all SUPER YUMMY! The especially enjoyed the chicken and asada tacos the best! The fish was nice and light and prepared grilled style just like I ordered! If you are looking for a light meal but NOT a salad get the fish tacos! SUPER YUMMY and DELICIOUS! I was even brave and put a few drops of HOT SAUCE on my tacos and boy was I ON FIRE! My poor throat and mouth got 3rd degree burns from a taste! I can't imagine if I had added more than a drop! YIKES! Burn baby burn! I think I downed about 2 glasses of my Arnold Palmer which both doused the flames coming from my throat and filled me up! But never fear I stuffed the last of my taco in my face! After lunch we decided to go for YOGURTLAND! Well not me I was full as a tick! SO I just waddled down the street in the hopes I would walk down some of my lunch! I was such a piggy...AND I LOVED IT! Awesome food and GREAT SERVICE and a beautiful warm day! GOTTA LOVE IT!

Filled us up, but not particularly authentic. Corn tortilla looked like a cross between a pita and flour tortilla. Food was bland. Perhaps one could say it was "healthier" mex food.

The beer was cold, but we missed happy hour by 20 minutes, bummer. The service was pretty slow and our food was burnt. Our fish tacos had very crispy, dark brown burnt fish. The waitress was decent but nothing out of the ordinary.

$7.50 for a lousy potato taco! One! Not two but one. The best part about this place is the bottle beer in the fridge. Will not return.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate.
